March 15, 2015 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Saginaw Spirit News Release
The Saginaw Spirit travelled to Compuware Arena to face off against the Plymouth Whalers on Sunday afternoon. The Spirit were looking to keep up the winning momentum as they finished with a 4-3 victory over Sarnia on Friday and a 6-5 victory over Plymouth on Saturday. Saginaw was able to do just that and took home a 6-3 win to the Dow Event Center, capturing their third win of the weekend and the final playoff spot.
The Saginaw Spirit and Plymouth Whalers followed suit of last night's performance of a back and forth affair during the first period on Sunday afternoon. The Spirit were able to get the game's scoring going early in the first period after Tye Felhaber banged home a rebound off the pad of Plymouth's starting goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic at the 2:33 mark. Felhaber recorded his 18th goal of the season with the help of Kris Bennett and Keaton Middleton. Saginaw's leading goal scorer Dylan Sadowy wasn't too far behind Felhaber as he made it a 2-0 game under a minute later. Sadowy's 42nd goal of the season came at 3:01 with Mitchell Webb and Devon Paliani on the assist. It wasn't until the later part of the period that Plymouth put a tally on the board on a power play goal by Victor Crus Rydberg. Mathieu Henderson and Mathew Campagna were credited with the assist on the goal that made it a 2-1 game. Plymouth's Mathew Campagna beat Saginaw's starting goaltender David Ovsjannikov on the Whalers 2nd power play goal of the afternoon at 19:29 of the period. Campagna tied the game 2-2 with the help of Sonny Milano and Victor Crus Rydberg. Shots on goal in the first period favored the visiting Saginaw team 14-10.
The Saginaw Spirit retook their two-goal lead in the second period, thanks to some strong offensive flair from Connor Brown and Jesse Barwell. Brown was able to put the Spirit ahead of the Whalers 3-2 at 6:01 of the period, netting his 19th goal of the season. Kris Bennett and Tye Felhaber recorded the assists on the play. Saginaw moved to the power play with four minutes left in the second, providing a man advantage for the visiting team. Saginaw's Jesse Barwell capitalized on the opportunity and reinstated a two-goal lead over the Whalers at 16:11 of the period. Mitch Stephens and Michael Holmes took the assists on the play. Saginaw followed suit of the first period and outshot Plymouth 10-8 during the second.
Tye Felhaber netted an early third period goal to put the Saginaw Spirit three tallies ahead of the Plymouth Whalers. His 19th goal of the season and second of the afternoon came at the 1:57 mark and was assisted by Connor Brown and Chase Stewart. Plymouth was able to slightly cut into the Spirit lead at the 10:00 mark when Yannick Rathgeb beat Ovsjannikov on the power play with the help of Francesco Vilardi and Will Bitten. However, the mid-period Plymouth goal could not stop the Spirit from finding the back of the net one last time before the buzzer sounded. With one second left in the game Jesse Barwell put home his second goal of the afternoon and 13th of the season on Plymouth's empty net, giving way to a 6-3 Spirit victory. Final shots on goal read Saginaw 32, Plymouth 28.
Saginaw will continue on their road endeavors on March 20th as they head to the Budweiser Gardens to face off against the London Knights. Puck is scheduled to drop at 7:30 p.m. This game can be heard on the flagship station of the Saginaw Spirit FM Talk and Sports WSGW 100.5. The Spirit will be back in action on Saturday, March 21st for their last regular season game at the Dow Event Center as they play host to the Kitchener Rangers. Puck is scheduled to drop at 7:11 p.m.
