Sacramento Republic FC Finish in Scoreless Draw with Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2

Sacramento Republic FC failed to find the back of the net against Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2, but kept their shut out streak alive as they played to a 0-0 draw on Sunday. The match started with WFC2 controlling much of the possession. However, Republic FC had the first real chance of the match in the 6th minute defender when James Kiffe pushed the ball up the left side and send a lofted cross into the middle that found the head of forward Mark Sherrod. Sherrod headed the ball toward goal, but right at WFC2 keeper Sean Melvin, who made the save.

WFC2 saw their best chance of the half come in the 12th minute. Forward Alphonso Davies took the ball from the left win to the middle of the park before laying the ball off to Daniel Haber at the top of the box. Haber took the pass and sent a left-footed strike past Republic FC goalkeeper Dominik Jakubek and into the goal, but Haber was deemed offside keeping the match scoreless.

Republic FC had a goal of their own disallowed later in the match, also by an offside call in the 43rd minute. Defender Emrah Klimenta went one-on-one with a defender at the top right corner of the box before sending a cross into the middle. Klimenta's cross found JJ Koval who was unable to get a shot off. However, the deflected ball found forward Tommy Stewart. who buried the shot, but was called offside keeping the match 0-0 going into the half.

In the second half of the match, Republic FC quickly established themselves as the dominant side, controlling most of the possession. However, WFC2 saw the first real chance of the half in the 54th minute when Haber received a through ball on the right side of the field and looked to go one-on-one with Jakubek, but the keeper was up to the task, quickly rushing off his line to make a sliding save.

Republic FC saw their best chances of the second half on back-to-back shots in the 82nd and 83rd minutes.

The first shot came after midfielder Agustin Cazarez received the ball from Danny Barrera who had won the ball in the middle of the park in the 82nd minute. Cazarez pushed the ball up before taking a powerful left-footed strike toward goal but right at Melvin who made the save.

Just seconds later, Alvarez sent a left-footed cross from the left corner of the field into the middle of the box. Substitute forward Cameron Iwasa took a jumping, right-footed volley shot toward goal, but Melvin moved quickly to his left and made the diving save to keep the score level at 0-0.

With the shutout Republic FC has now gone 564 consecutive regular season minutes without allowing a goal, dating back to a 66th minute goal by WFC2 on Sept. 6, 2015. Republic FC is the only team in the USL to have not allowed a goal this season.

Republic FC continue their road trip when they travel to Portland to take on Portland Timbers 2 on Sunday, Apr. 17. Kickoff is 2 p.m. PT at Merlo Field. Republic FC then return home to face Saint Louis FC on Saturday, Apr. 23 at Bonney Field. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. and tickets are on sale at Ticketmaster.com.
