Sacramento Republic FC rallied from behind to defeat Real Monarchs SLC 2-1 on Saturday night in Reno, Nev. thanks to second half goals from forwards Cameron Iwasa and Adam Jahn.

The match started with each side looking for an advantage after having played each other just three days earlier. Neither side had a strong look toward goal in the first thirty minutes of play as both sides worked to gain a strong advantage on possession.

Republic FC would get the first real look on goal in the 37th minute. Defender Chris Christian won the ball just outside the box on the left side after Real Monarchs tried to clear a Republic FC corner. Christian's ball found the head of fellow defender Mike da Fonte who sent the ball toward goal, but Monarchs keeper Lalo Fernandez parried his shot away. The ball did not go far, however, as forward Jahn slid the ball away from a defender before popping up and sending a cross toward goal. Fernandez once again knocked the ball away, but again right to Jahn who tried toward goal again this time with a lofted shot, but his attempt went off the crossbar to hold the match scoreless.

Despite the lack shots on goal for either side, the Monarchs managed to strike first finding the back of the net in the 41st minute. Forward Kevaughn Frater received the ball in the middle of the field near the top of the box, turning to get himself open before sending a powerful strike toward goal. However, da Fonte managed to deflect the ball away with his back, but Monarchs leading scorer, Ricardo Velazco, scooped up the rebound. Velazco then hit a curling outside of the foot shot which chipped up and over the keeper and landed in the bottom left corner of the goal to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead going into the half.

Republic FC wasted no time finding an equalizing early the second half. In the 47th minute, defender Emrah Klimenta gathered a rebound off a Republic FC attack and pushed the ball down the right side of the box. After a give-and-go to midfielder Octavio Guzman, Klimenta crossed the ball to forward Cameron Iwasa, who simply tapped Klimenta's grounded cross into the far side of the goal, leveling the score at 1-1.

Republic FC then took the lead shortly after in the 55th minute. Iwasa played a one-two with Guzman along the right side of the field. Iwasa then sent a cross toward a Jahn as the forward made a run toward the far post. Jahn connected with a header on Iwasa's pass, but Fernandez blocked the shot. However, the ball fell right back to the feet of Jahn, who roofed the rebound under the crossbar to give Republic FC the 2-1 lead.

The Monarchs had two strong chances near the end of the match to find an equalizer but Republic FC's defense stayed strong. In the 78th minute second half substitute Colin Rolfe received a chipped ball on the far right side from Amass Amankona. Rolfe cut toward the middle before sending a cross that looked like an easy tap-in for the Monarchs, but da Fonte made a diving header to block the ball away and preserve the lead. In the 88th minute midfielder Andrew Brody broke down the right side before sending in another cross to the middle. However, Brody's cross, which started toward the goal's top corner, ricocheted off the crossbar instead as Republic FC captured a 2-1 victory.

"When you go behind like that you have to remain calm and remain consistent," said Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle following the match. "We had two excellent goals, well worked, one and two touch on the outside. Our goals now are coming from the outside with good quality. We have to keep doing what we are doing, remain consistent with each other, because we are looking a very strong outfit now."

Republic FC will return home on June 18 to take on Rio Grande Valley FC Toros who sit just one point ahead of Republic FC in the standings after their 3-0 win over Oklahoma City Energy FC on June 11. Kickoff is 8 p.m. at Bonney Field. Tickets are on sale at Ticketmaster.com.
