Arizona United Snaps Winless Streak with 2-0 Win
June 11, 2016 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Phoenix Rising FC News Release
PEORIA, Arizona - Arizona United Soccer Club forward Chris Cortez played against his former team, OC Blues FC, for the first time since he left the club last season. He made the most of it by scoring the game-winning goal in a 2-0 Arizona United win in front of 1,707 fans. The club snapped a five-match winless streak in league play and won its first match at home.
"It's the first (win at home)," said Arizona United head coach Frank Yallop. "The first of many hopefully. I just think that we play pretty well at home. We just didn't get the results. It was nice to play an even game but we looked more dangerous going forward. We deserved to win tonight so that was good."
Cortez's goal came late in the first half. After a bad Blues turnover in the middle of the field, midfielder Luke Rooney hit a streaking Long Tan down the right flank. Tan reached the endline, then sent a centering pass into the middle of the box toward a charging Cortez. The former OC Blues forward met the ball and headed the pass into the back of the net.
"For us it is a big game," Cortez said. "I think more then anything it is important to turn around a couple bad results. (A winless streak) wasn't obviously ideal and this is a great way to bounce back. ... Luckily I am able to get on the end of a great ball from Long today and make that happen."
Forward Sam Garza put the game away in stoppage time with his second goal of the season to make it 2-0.
Arizona United returns home next Saturday, June 18, to take on Saint Louis FC. It will be the first-ever meeting between the two clubs. Kickoff will be at 7:30 P.M. and tickets can be purchased at www.ArizonaUnited.com.
