Sacramento Republic FC 1, LA Galaxy II 1

September 10, 2016 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Sacramento Republic FC News Release

The first half started with LA Galaxy II looking more comfortable on their home field, although Republic FC fans, including traveling members from the Tower Bridge Battalion, strongly out cheered their Los Dos counterparts. Despite early pressure from Los Dos, Republic FC's defense stood strong, not allowing a good chance on goal until the 23rd minute. Forward Adonis Amaya intercepted a Republic FC pass back to Newton. Amaya went one-on-one with Republic FC's keeper, driving the ball to the touchline before cutting back and sending a pass to a wide open Ariel Lassiter. The forward redirected Amaya's pass toward an open goal but Mike da Fonte had tracked back and blocked the ball off the line keeping the match scoreless early.

Los Dos would break through however in the 38th minute. A free kick from Jaime Villarreal, about 25 yards from goal, was blocked up by Newton, but instead of going over the bar, the ball hit the bar and fell to the feet of Lassiter who blasted it in from short range putting Los Dos ahead 1-0.

Republic FC would respond quickly pushing back at the Los Dos defense. Defender James Kiffe drove the ball down the left side, sending a cross toward the back post and JJ Koval. The midfielder out-jumped his defender, heading the ball toward goal, but the shot was deflected away keeping the slim 1-0 Los Dos lead going into half.

Republic FC came out the aggressor in the second half dominating possession and the chance on goal. In the 61st minute, Republic FC had their first strong chance of the half. Defender Elliott Hord controlled the ball at the top right side of the box before taking it down toward the touchline and sending it back to Matt LaGrassa who was following the play. The midfielder played Williams open in the middle of the box. Williams went one-on-one with the keeper, drawing Los Dos goalkeeper Clement Diop out before sending the pass back toward Mackenzie Pridham who was open in the middle of the box. The pass however was a bit behind Pridham who could not reach the ball and thus was unable to take a shot.

In the 72nd minute, Republic FC looked poised to score after a foul about 25 yards out on the outside right of the box. Barrera's ensuing free kick looked destined for a Republic FC player on the back post, but Diop came off his line punching the ball away and earning a foul on Republic FC.

Republic FC would finally break through in the 83rd minute. On a counter attack, Republic FC played the ball through the middle of the field. Forward Cameron Iwasa played a long through ball, finding Kneeshaw in a one-on-one situation as he beat the offside trap. Kneeshaw then beat the onrushing Diop with a low shot, evening the score at 1-1.

With the tie and a Rio Grande Valley FC Toros loss to Portland Timbers 2, Republic FC remains atop the USL Western Conference, three points ahead of the Toros. Republic FC also tied their longest unbeaten streak of the season at nine consecutive matches.

Republic FC will return home to face LA Galaxy II again on Saturday, Sept. 17. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. at Bonney Field. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster.com.
