MONARCHS NEWS & NOTES

Penicheiro: Third in Career Games

Sacramento Monarchs guard Ticha Penicheiro moved into third place in the WNBA in career games played following Thursday's game against San Antonio. Penicheiro, now with 356 games played, surpassed Murriel Page (354) and is 12 games behind Phoenix Mercury center Tangela Smith (368).

Surpassing the Century Mark

The Monarchs have scored 100 or more points three times this season, most recently in their 101-93 victory over San Antonio on July 30 at ARCO Arena. The other two times that Sacramento has scored as many points were against the Phoenix Mercury: a 115-104 overtime loss in Phoenix on June 13 and a 107-105 loss in Sacramento on July 11. These losses were the first times that the Monarchs have not been victorious when surpassing the century mark; Sacramento has now scored 100 or more points seven times in franchise history and holds a 5-2 record in such games. Its highest century mark tally was a 108-96 victoy over the Detroit Shock on July 1, 2000.

Strong Defense Against the Sparks: Holding Los Angeles to 10 Points or Less in a Quarter

Since the WNBA changed from halves to quarters in 2006, Sacramento has held Los Angeles to less than 10 points in a quarter four times, in three different games: on June 14, 2008, the Sparks scored eight points in the first quarter; on June 21, 2009, they scored eight points in the fourth quarter; and on Aug. 1, 2009, they scored six in the second quarter and eight in the fourth quarter. Despite the strong defensive effort by the Monarchs, they have lost all three of these games.
