Monarchs Guard Chelsea Newton To Undergo Surgery

SACRAMENTO, CALIF., Aug. 4, 2009 - The Sacramento Monarchs announced today guard Chelsea Newton will undergo surgery to repair a medial meniscus tear in her left knee, diagnosed on July 19, 2009. Monarchs team physician Dr. Kirk Lewis will perform the surgery tomorrow, Weds., Aug. 5, at the UCD Surgery Center. More information will be available following the surgery.

Newton was originally selected by Sacramento in the second round (22nd overall) of the 2005 WNBA Draft and started every game in her rookie season, helping the Monarchs win the 2005 WNBA Championship. On Nov. 15, 2005, she was selected by the Chicago Sky in the WNBA Expansion Draft for the 2006 season. After one season with the Sky, she returned to Sacramento through a trade deal effective for the 2007 season. In the 2009 season, Newton has played in 21 games and is averaging 15.3 minutes, 3.0 points, 1.4 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 0.9 steals per game. Through her five WNBA seasons she has totaled 142 games and is averaging 19.5 minutes, 5.1 points, 1.9 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.0 steals per game.
