MONARCHS NEWS & NOTES

Powell Sets New Franchise Record: Consecutive Free Throws Made Monarchs forward Nicole Powell's made free throw streak came to an end during the July 23 game at New York as she finished the game with 3-of-4 made free throw attempts. Her 49 consecutive made free throws set a new franchise record in addition to marking the third highest tally in WNBA history. Powell initially broke the franchise record during the July 15 game at Phoenix when she sank 6-of-6 made shots from the charity stripe to finish the game with 40 consecutive free throws made. She broke the former record of 38, set by herself from June 27, 2007, through Aug. 5, 2007.

First All-Star Appearance for Powell

Powell made her first WNBA All-Star game appearance - as a replacement for injured Los Angeles Sparks center Lisa Leslie - on Sat., July 25, as the game was held at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The Monarchs forward scored 21 points and tied two All-Star records with five made three-point field goals of nine three-point field goal attempts; her five three-pointers helped the West set a new All-Star record with 18 made baskets from beyond the arc. The West beat the East by a 130-118 final score; starting forward Swin Cash of the Seattle Storm was named MVP as she scored 22 points to beat Powell's total by the slimmest of margins.
