2006 WNBA All-Decade Team is Announced
The 2006 WNBA All-Decade Team has been announced and Monarchs forward Yolanda Griffith was chosen by fans, a panel of national and WNBA-market media and the league's current players and coaches as one of ten of the most influential players in WNBA history. In addition, current Monarchs guard Ticha Penicheiro and retired Monarchs guard Ruthie Bolton were both given honorable mention.
The All-Decade Team will be brought together for the first time and formally honored at the 2006 WNBA All-Star Game set to take place at Madison Square Garden in New York on July 12. The game will be televised live on ESPN at 7:30 ET.
DeMya Walker to Rejoin Team
Monarchs forward DeMya Walker will return from maternity leave and rejoin the team back in Sacramento on Thursday. Walker is expected to begin practicing with the team again on Thursday, June 15 at the Sacramento Monarchs Practice Facility. Monarchs/Comets Connections
Sacramento's guard Ticha Penicheiro and Houston's forward Sheryl Swoopes both played for UMMC in Ekaterinburg, Russia during the 2003 FIBA Women's World Cup.
Houston Comets Center Michelle Snow graduated from Tennessee in 2002, while Monarchs guard Kara Lawson graduated in 2003. Both Lawson and Snow played on the same team for three years (1999-02). Lawson and Snow were also teammates on the 2003 WNBA Select Team that participated in the FIBA Women's World Cup.
Monarchs guard Ticha Penicheiro and Comets forward Sheryl Swoopes and forward Tina Thompson were all starters for the 2000 WNBA All-Star Game for the Western Conference.
Comets guard Dawn Staley graduated from Virginia in 1992, while Monarchs forward DeMya Walker graduated from Virginia in 1999.
Monarchs forward Yolanda Griffith and Comets forward Sheryl Swoopes were teammates on the gold-medal winning USA Women's Basketball team in the 2000 Olympic Games. Comets forward Tina Thompson joined the pair on the 2004 USA Women's Basketball team that won the gold medal again in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Comets head coach Van Chancellor coached these three players on the 2004 gold medal squad.
WNBA All-Stars
All-Star Balloting has begun! The WNBA All-Star game will be played in New York City at Madison Square Garden on July 12, 2006. On the ballot this year for the Monarchs are Rebbekah Brunson League Leaders Griffith WNBA's All-Time Offensive Rebound Leader Yolanda Griffith is the WNBA's all-time offensive rebound leader. She currently has 836 career offensive rebounds (as of 6/10/06) Penicheiro WNBA's All-Time Assist Leader -On June 17, 2004 at Minnesota, Ticha Penicheiro became the WNBA's all-time assist leader. She currently has 1,611 career assists (as of 6/10/06). -On July 1, 2005, Penicheiro dished out her 1,500th career assist as the Monarchs defeated the Detroit Shock, 80-63.
