SaberCats to be Honored by San Jose Sports Hall of Fame

SAN JOSE, Calif. (Oct. 31, 2002) â The 2002 Arena Football League Champion San Jose SaberCats, will be will be honored with an "Exceptional Achievement" award by the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame at its annual induction ceremony on Wednesday, November 13th at HP Pavilion at San Jose.
"The goal of the SaberCats organization is to put the best product on the field," said SaberCats' Vice President Hank Stern. "We accomplished that feat in 2002 and it is an honor to be recognized for it."
San Jose captured its first league title by defeating the Arizona Rattlers, 52-14, in ArenaBowl XVI on August 18.
The SaberCats have consistently been one of the top teams in the Arena Football League since their inception in 1995 and they culminated their eighth year in the AFL by posting a league record 13 regular season wins and a 16-1 overall mark in 2002.
"The SaberCats have not only brought great pride to the city of San Jose, but to all of the Santa Clara County," said Joe Dooling, Chairman of the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame.
In its eighth year, the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame has previously recognized the San Jose CyberRays, San Jose Earthquakes and San Jose State Men's Baseball with âExceptional Achievement' awards.
The induction ceremony will begin with a reception at 5:30 p.m. followed by the dinner and ceremony at 7:00 p.m. This year's event will also feature a silent auction. Presented by the Private Banking Group of Comerica Bank, in cooperation with FOX Sports Net Bay Area, SBC Pacific Bell, Hewlett-Packard Company, and San Jose Magazine, a portion of the event proceeds will benefit the Silicon Valley Region of Special Olympics.
