SaberCats sign receiver Rodney Wright

SAN JOSE, Calif. (Nov. 16, 2007) - Free agent receiver Rodney Wright, who enjoyed a career season in 2007, has agreed to a two-year pact to remain with the ArenaBowl champion San Jose SaberCats, the club announced today.
"Rodney is a versatile athlete who can do a lot of good things on the football field," said SaberCats head coach and general manager Darren Arbet. "He's very familiar with our system and it was important for us to bring him back."
A three-year Arena Football League veteran, Wright (5-9, 185) established career-highs with 98 receptions, 1,076 yards and 10 touchdowns last season while adding 710 yards and three scores on 31 kickoff returns in 11 games. During the team's championship run Wright totaled 26 catches for 282 yards and a touchdown in three playoff games, including a game-high tying 10 grabs in San Jose's 55-33 win over Columbus in ArenaBowl XXI.
The former Fresno State standout burst onto the AFL scene in 2005 with 59 receptions for 678 yards and eight touchdowns and was voted the team's Rookie and Ironman of the Year by his teammates. A variety of injuries limited him to just two games in 2006.
Wright is the ninth free agent signed by the SaberCats since the signing period began on October, 29. He will enter the 2008 season ranked 10th on the SaberCats career record chart in receptions (159), receiving yards (1,776) and touchdown receptions (18).
A premiere franchise in the AFL, San Jose last season won its third ArenaBowl championship in six years and has captured seven Western Division titles, eight consecutive playoff appearances and owns the league's best regular season record this decade. The SaberCats begin defense of their AFL title on March 3 in Chicago and play their 2008 home opener on Saturday, March 15 against Western Division rival Arizona.
