SaberCats Sign QB Bob Bees

SAN JOSE, Calif. (January 16, 2003) - Quarterback Bob Bees, formerly of the Richmond Speed of arenafootball2, signed a two-year contract today to play with the World Champion San Jose SaberCats, announced head coach Darren Arbet.

Bees (6-3, 216) will serve as Mark Grieb's backup as the SaberCats prepare to defend their Arena Football League title.

Originally signed by the SaberCats in 1999, Bees never played a regular season game that year. He was selected by Oklahoma in the 2000 Expansion Draft and got his first AFL action with the Wranglers playing in two games during the 2000 campaign

After a short stay in Oklahoma, Bees signed with the Richmond Speed of af2 and played three seasons (2000-02) completing 748-of-1,332 passes for 9,481 yards and 168 touchdowns. He led the Speed to the 2001 ArenaCup title game by throwing for 3,579 yards and 73 touchdowns on the year.

An NAIA All-American at Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Mont., Bees had his most productive af2 campaign came in 2002 when he completed 293-of-481 passes (60.9%) for 3,650 yards with 64 TDs. He was under center for all 34 wins in Speed history and owns a 34-13 record as Richmond's starting quarterback.

Often recognized as one of the nation's most affordable and fan-friendly sports leagues, the Arena Football League kicks off its 17th season and first on NBC beginning in February 2003. NBC will provide the AFL with unprecedented exposure by televising up to 70 games, including all playoff contests and ArenaBowl XVII on June 22.

The SaberCats begin defense of their World Championship when they travel to Arizona for an ArenaBowl XVI re-match with the Rattlers on February 2. San Jose plays its first home game against former quarterback and ArenaBowl XVI MVP John Dutton and the expansion Colorado Crush on February 22.
