SaberCats sign kicker Derek Schorejs

SAN JOSE, Calif. (May 19, 2005) â After losing K DAN FRANTZ to a season-ending knee injury at Arizona on May 14, the SaberCats announced the signing of former Philadelphia Soul K DEREK SCHOREJS as his replacement for the remainder of the season.
Schorejs (5-11, 215, Bowling Green) began the season with the Soul and converted 2-of-7 field goals and 38-of-46 PATs in seven games. Ironically, his last game with the Soul before being released was in San Jose on March 11, a game won by the SaberCats, 52-26.
During his career in the AFL, which also includes stints with the Florida Bobcats (1998) and the New Jersey Red Dogs (2000), Schorejs (pronounced SHORE-eyes) has been successful on 15-of-48 field goals and 124-of-142 (87.3%) PATs.
Frantz, the league leader in PATs attempted and made on the year, sustained a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee in the fourth quarter of San Jose's 54-44 loss to the Rattlers. Frantz was kicked in the knee by a teammate while attempting to make a tackle on a kickoff return.
The 2nd-year player out of Portland State, who ranks 2nd on the SaberCats career list for kick scoring, will undergo surgery in the near future.
Meanwhile, the SaberCats also announced the re-signing of linemen GEORGE WILLIAMS and ALBREY BATTLE to contract extensions that run through the 2007 season.
The SaberCats play their final regular season game of 2005 on Saturday, May 21, when they host the league-leading Georgia Force. A victory would give the defending ArenaBowl champions a berth in the AFL playoffs for a sixth consecutive season.
