
SaberCats sign former Cal Bear Jamaal Cherry

SAN JOSE, Calif. (Dec. 28, 2004) â Former Cal lineman JAMAAL CHERRY has agreed to terms on a contract to play for the Arena Football League Champion San Jose SaberCats, announced general manager Terry Malley.
The 6-3, 290 pound Cherry played the past two seasons with the Quad City Steamwheelers of arenafootball2, a developmental league for the AFL, where he was converted to fullback/linebacker during the 2004 campaign.
He will compete for a roster spot at the fullback/linebacker position when the SaberCats open training camp on January 5.
In 12 games last season Cherry ran for 11 yards on four attempts, caught two passes for 16 yards, including a 12-yard touchdown, and added 8.5 tackles, 2.0 sacks and returned an interception 32-yards for a score leading the Steamwheelers to a 10-6 record and a Midwest Division title.
A current resident of Hayward, Cherry played four years at Cal as a defensive lineman posting 47 tackles and six sacks in 41 career games. His best season statistically came in 1999 when he totaled 20 tackles, including six for loss, and added 1.5 sacks.
The SaberCats begin defense of their Arena Football League title at Tampa Bay on Saturday, January 29 and play their 11th home opener on Saturday, February 5 against the Las Vegas Gladiators at HP Pavilion.
