Gladiators open 2005 training camp

Las Vegas, NV, December 28, 2004 – The Las Vegas Gladiators, under new head coach Ron James, will open their 2005 camp in Las Vegas on Tuesday, January 4, at Sam Boyd Stadium. All Gladiators' training camp workouts are open to the public.

Camp begins with a two-day mini-camp for quarterbacks, wide receivers, defense backs and centers. Offensive/defensive lineman and fullback/linebackers report on Thursday, January 6, with the first full-squad workout taking place. Gladiators training camp breaks on Sunday, January 23. The Gladiators begin the 2005 season with a January 30 home game against the Los Angeles Avengers.

Mini Camp: The first day of the two-day mini camp will begin on Tuesday, January 4. Practices will be conducted at 9 AM and at 2 PM, with a break in between for meetings and lunch.

Full-Squad Workouts: The first full squad workout will be held on Thursday, January 6, beginning at 9 AM and running until approximately 2 PM. Players and coaches will be available for interview opportunities after practice. Practices during training camp will be conducted in "back-to-back" fashion and will conclude at about 3 PM each day. Coaching Staff: Head coach Ron James is in his first season as head coach. James was previously the Gladiators assistant head coach/OL/DL/special teams coach for the past three seasons. Stan Davis (Defensive Coordinator), Gary Gussman (Director of Football Operations/Special Teams Coach), Jody Marshall (FB/LB Coach) and Eddie Brown (WR Coach) round out the Gladiators' coaching staff.

Roster Size: AFL teams are permitted to bring 37 players into camp. Rosters must be cut to 24 by Monday, January 24, 2005.

Key Returning Players: QB Clint Dolezel (nine AFL seasons, 28,850 yards passing, 575 touchdowns, 66.4 career completion percentage), OS Marcus Nash (2004 - 154 receptions for 1,771 yards and 46 touchdowns), WR/LB Coco Blalock (2004 - 81 receptions for 949 yards, 15 touchdowns, 48 kick returns for 963 yards with two touchdowns), FB/LB Frank Carter (2004 - 132 yards rushing, 10 touchdowns, 28 tackles, 1.5 sacks), DS Cornelius Bonner (2004 - 55 receptions for 732 and 11 touchdowns, 54.5 tackles and eight interceptions), WR/DB Dennison Robinson (2004 - 44 receptions for 465 yards, 32.5 tackles and five interceptions), DS Marvin Taylor (45 tackles and five interceptions), OL/DL Thaddeus Bullard (29 tackles, four TFL and three sacks), OL/DL Steve Konopka (17.5 tackles, 6.5 TFL and two sacks).

Key Newcomers: WR/DB Dameon Porter (2004 - 41 receptions for 490 yards, nine touchdowns, 28 tackles and one interception with the Georgia Force and Austin Wranglers), OL/DL Wilky Bazile (2004 - 15 tackles, 4.5 TFL and two sacks with the Columbus Destroyers), WR/LB Joe Douglass (2004 - 35 receptions for 432 yards, nine receptions and 12 tackles with the Los Angeles Avengers), WR/LB Junior Lord (2004 - 46 receptions for 409 yards, 11 touchdowns with the Detroit Fury), OL/DL Lucas Yarnell (eight AFL seasons, 68.5 tackles, 3.5 tackles and 2.5 TFL).

The Gladiators third season at the Thomas & Mack Center kicks off on Sunday, January 30, 2005 at Noon against divisional rival Los Angeles Avengers. The game will be televised nationally on NBC.
