SaberCats sign af2 Ironman Floyd, Kuhn

SAN JOSE, Calif. (Oct. 11, 2005) - The San Jose SaberCats reached an agreement on a two-year contract with 2005 arenafootball2 Ironman of the Year MARQUIS FLOYD and also penned FB/LB JOHN KUHN to a three-year deal, the club announced today.

Floyd (6-0, 190) had an outstanding campaign last season playing under new SaberCats defensive coordinator Kevin Guy at Rio Grande Valley to capture the league's most prestigious award. He was the Dorados' leading receiver with 101 catches for 1,425 yards and 29 touchdowns while also rushing for four scores and throwing a touchdown pass.

Defensively, the Monroe, Georgia native placed fourth in the league with nine interceptions and added 11 pass breakups and 47 tackles. Floyd was named the U.S. Army Ironman of the Week during the semifinal round of the af2 playoffs after catching nine passes for 139 yards and three scores and adding an interception in a win over Tulsa.

A standout defender and kick return specialist at the University of West Georgia, Floyd was a three-time American Football Coaches Association All-American. He tallied 19 interceptions during his four year career and established a school record in career punt return yardage.

Signed as an undrafted free agent by the Pittsburgh Steelers in April, Kuhn (6-0, 255) enjoyed a stellar career at NCAA Division II Shippensburg University where he was a Northeast Region finalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy as a senior in 2004.

The holder of 27 school records and six Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference marks, Kuhn ended his career with 4,685 yards rushing, 53 touchdowns, 5,300 all-purpose yards and 26 games with at least 100 yards rushing, all school records. In addition he was named the PSAC Western Division Offensive Player of the Year in 2003 and was a three-time first-team all-conference selection.

A standout in the classroom as well, Kuhn was a First-Team ESPN The Magazine/College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-America in both 2003 and 2004 and was named First-Team Academic All-District II three-straight years.

San Jose has now added six free agents to its roster since the signing period began on Oct. 4. FB/LBs Ja'Mar Toombs and Phil Glover, DS A.K. Keyes and WR/DB Charles Pauley all signed last week and the team re-acquired WR/DB Fred Coleman in a trade with Nashville.
