San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. (June 30, 2005) - The San Jose SaberCats have hired DAVE WITTHUN (pronounced WHIT-toon) as their new offensive/defensive line coach and also appointed him their Director of Player Personnel, the club announced today.
Witthun, 35, comes to San Jose from the Chicago Rush, where he served as fullbacks/linebackers coach and special team's coordinator for the last four seasons and had also been the Rush's personnel director since August 2002. The Rush advanced to the semifinals of the Arena Football League playoffs in each of the last two seasons and three times in the last four years.
"Dave is a fine young coach who is hungry to win an ArenaBowl title," said SaberCats head coach Darren Arbet.
Witthun succeeds Bill Tripp, who resigned last month, as the SaberCats line coach, and will take the reigns as the team's player personnel director from Arbet.
"This is an exciting opportunity," said Witthun. "I've always wanted to be a line coach and personnel director in this league. Coach Arbet gave me the opportunity and I jumped on it."
A former lineman in the AFL, Witthun spent parts of two seasons with the Cleveland Thunderbolts, Milwaukee Mustangs and Iowa Barnstormers. He was a center for the Kurt Warner-led Iowa team that was ArenaBowl runner-up in 1997.
Prior to joining the Rush, Witthun spent two seasons as a coach in arenafootball2. He was the line coach and strength & conditioning coach of the Pensacola Barracudas in 2000 and served as the assistant head coach and line coach of the Macon Knights in 2001.
From Northern California, Witthun was raised in Fairfield and attended Fairfield High School before playing collegiately at American River College and Portland State University.
"I'm looking forward to getting back to California, I definitely miss the weather," Witthun added.
