San Jose SaberCats News Release

San Jose, CA- For the second year in a row, wide receiver-linebacker James Roe of the San Jose SaberCats has been named to the U.S. Army All-Ironman Team by the Arena Football League. Joining Roe, for the first time, is wide receiver-defensive back Rashied Davis, it was announced Thursday by the AFL.

Roe, who began his 5th season in the league, led the SaberCats in touchdown receptions (27), scoring (174 points) and fumble recoveries during the regular season. From his linebacker position he collected 25.5 tackles, had an interception for a TD and a pair of pass break ups and forced fumbles.

Davis, another in a long-line of electrifying SaberCat runback specialists, led the team with 47 kickoff returns and had four for touchdowns. His 24.1 yards return average was the best in the league during the regular season.

"This is the first time I've won anything like this," said an elated Davis. "You work hard all year and then receive something like this; it's an exciting moment for me."

Out of San Jose State, Davis had four missed field goal returns for an average of 25.5 yards. Defensively, he had three interceptions, nine pass breakups and 44 tackles.

The 30-year-old Roe has missed a few games late in the season, was just as appreciative of his second consecutive honor. "I'm truly honored," said the former Norfolk State standout. "My teammates are the ones who have the confidence in me to perform at a high standard. I appreciate the league recognizing me for what I have done."

Roe had 75 catches this season in 12 games for 884 yards. He also had one pass for a touchdown and rushed four times (scoring once).

His best game of the season was, ironically, against Tampa Bay, the team the SaberCats play Saturday in an AFL quarterfinal playoff game. In the 'Cats' 62-55 win at the Storm, April 4, Roe had 11 catches from quarterback Mark Grieb for 158 yards and a league-record tying seven TDS.

"I can't wait to get back on the field," said Roe, sidelined with a groin injury since May 2.

Also named to the 13-member squad were former SaberCats fullback-linebacker Bob McMillen (2001-02) and receiver-defensive back Kevin McKenzie (2003). McMillen, with the Chicago Rush, this season and led the league in rushing touchdowns (22) and McKenzie, a top candidate for the individual Ironman of the Year award, had an outstanding season with the Colroado Crush. McKenzie had 14 receiving touchdowns, four interceptions and five pass breakups.

The SaberCats are in action on Saturday, June 5, when they meet Tampa Bay in an AFL quarterfinal contest. The game will be nationally televised by NBC beginning at 11:45 a.m. (PT). Tickets are available by contacting any Northern California TicketMaster outlet, online at www.ticketmaster.com and at the HP Pavilion box office. Group tickets can be purchased through the SaberCats office by contacting (408) 573-5577.
