SaberCats ink Terrance Metcalf to two-year deal

SAN JOSE, Calif. (Nov. 30, 2005) - Receiver TERRANCE METCALF, the son of former NFL standout Terry Metcalf and brother of NFL Pro-Bowler Eric Metcalf, signed a two-year contract to play with the two-time ArenaBowl champion San Jose SaberCats, the club announced today.

Signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in January, Metcalf (6-4, 210) was allocated to NFL Europe where he was selected in the 16th round of the player allocation draft by the Hamburg Sea Devils. Metcalf hauled in 18 receptions for 395 and three touchdowns to help the first-year Sea Devils to a 5-5 record this past season.

A four-year letterwinner (1999-02) at South Carolina State, Metcalf was an all-conference pick his senior year after leading the Bulldogs with 30 catches for 724 yards and seven scores. As a junior he led the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference with a 32.2 yards per catch average totaling 515 yards and two touchdowns on 16 receptions.

Born in Canada, Metcalfe attended Seattle Preparatory School where he was an all-conference pick as a two-way performer. He originally entered the NFL signing a rookie free agent contract with the Oakland Raiders in 2003.

The SaberCats also signed six-year veteran OL/DL KARL BATES to a one-year contract and waived rookie DS A.K. KEYES.

Bates (6-4, 275, Kentucky Wesleyan) has played in 66 regular season games with four different teams during his career totaling 56.0 tackles and 8.0 sacks. He spent last season with the Las Vegas Gladiators posting 9.0 tackles and a forced fumble in 12 games. During the 2001 campaign, Bates started all 14 games with the Houston ThunderBears.

The SaberCats open the 2006 season, their 12th in the Arena Football League, on Saturday, January 28 when they host the expansion Utah Blaze.
