SAN JOSE, Calif. (January 24, 2003) â Five-year veteran FB/LB Shalon Baker, who has spent his entire Arena Football League career in a San Jose SaberCats uniform, today signed a free agent contract to return to the World Champions for another season, announced General Manager Terry Malley.
Baker (5-7, 185) has appeared in 55 regular season games during his career and is the SaberCats all-time leader in assisted tackles. He enters the 2003 campaign ranked third in career receptions, receiving yards, touchdown catches and total tackles.
A 1998 AFL All-Rookie Team selection, Baker had his most productive season in 1999 when he caught 74 balls for 1,156 yards and 22 touchdowns. He also posted 35 total tackles that season to earn All-Ironman Team honors.
A former Rookie of the Year in Canadian Football League with the Edmonton Eskimos, Baker played three years in the CFL before joining the SaberCats organization in December of 1997.
The SaberCats begin defense of their World Championship when they travel to Arizona for an ArenaBowl XVI re-match with the Rattlers on February 2. The g ame will be regionally televised by NBC.
San Jose plays its first home game against former quarterback and ArenaBowl XVI MVP John Dutton and the expansion Colorado Crush on February 22.
