San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. (May 3, 2002) - San Jose SaberCats rookie DS/KR Clevan Thomas was named the Arena Football League's Rookie of the Month for April and FB/LB Bob McMillen was honored as the "ADT" Defensive Player of the Week for games ending April 28. The AFL office announced its award winners this week.
Thomas (5-10, 197) has emerged as the SaberCats' top defensive back and main kick return threat through the first two weeks of the season. The former Florida State Seminole intercepted a pass late in his first career AFL game to preserve a one-point win over Arizona on April 20.
In Tampa Bay on April 27, Thomas tied an AFL record by returning a kickoff 58-yards for his first AFL touchdown. For the season Thomas has 11 combined kick returns (kickoff and missed field goal) for 247 yards. He also leads the team and ranks 4th in the league with 15.0 tackles.
McMillen (6-2, 254), turned in the play of the game in San Jose's 61-54 win at Tampa Bay on April 27. With less than a minute to play in regulation and the score tied, McMillen returned an interception 46-yards for the game-winning touchdown. It was McMillen's fourth career interception and third for a score. The 7-year AFL veteran also added 5.0 tackles (4 solo) and a pass breakup.
The SaberCats, one of just two undefeated teams in the league, host the Georgia Force at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 4 in the Compaq Center at San Jose. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at all Northern California TicketMaster outlets and the Compaq Center at San Jose ticket office.
