The Manitoba Moose Yearling Foundation is pleased to announce they will name Ryan Dech as the first recipient of the Luc Bourdon Provincial AAA Minor Hockey Scholarship award at the fourth annual Manitoba Moose Yearling Foundation Gala Dinner on March 16th at MTS Centre. The event starts at 7:00PM.

Ryan has spent the past two seasons with the Winnipeg Thrashers of the Manitoba Midget AAA Hockey League. Two years ago, Dech helped the Thrashers to the 2009 Telus Cup Midget National Championships. This season, as an assistant captain, the 16-year old defenceman exhibited tremendous leadership in what was a trying year for the club. At the conclusion of his season with the Thrashers, Dech joined the Western Hockey League's Edmonton Oil Kings for the duration of their regular season which ended this past weekend.

Academically, Ryan is an "A" student who maintains an above-80 average at St. Paul's High School. He participated in band classes in his first two years at St. Paul's, playing the piano as well as the trumpet, and he participated in the choir. Even though he was unable to continue his musical studies this current school year, he has continued on playing the guitar on his own time.

The Luc Bourdon Provincial AAA Minor Hockey Scholarship Award was established in memory of Luc Bourdon who passed away tragically at the age of 21 on May 29, 2008. Bourdon was a first-round draft choice of the Vancouver Canucks in 2005 and played in 41 games with the Moose and 27 games with Vancouver in his short pro career. He also captured a pair of World Junior Gold Medals with Team Canada in 2006 & 2007. Along with his abilities on the ice, Luc also possessed a natural talent in music. His passion when playing the guitar along with his captivating song-writing showed he truly had a gift that couldn't be taught. As a result, the scholarship award was set-up to honor Luc's love of the game of hockey and his passion for music.
