Visalia Rawhide News Release

VISALIA – Russ Weber will be remembered by many of Visalia's youth. He gave them the opportunity to participate in Visalia Youth Baseball when they could not have otherwise afforded to register.

Most Visalians never knew of Russ's generosity to the baseball program or to our community's youth. Unfortunately it is now, after the passing of Weber, when much of his kindness came to the attention of the general public. With the blessing of Annette Weber, the Visalia Oaks will begin fundraising to provide assistance for some of Visalia's youth to enroll in Visalia Youth Baseball. As a tribute to Annette and her late husband, the program will be called the Russ Weber Memorial VYB Sponsorship Drive.

After hearing about the program concept and its' dedication to Weber, Valley Independent Bank has generously contributed $750 to cover the registration of 10 VYB participants. "Russ made so many contributions to our community, many of which we will never know. It is an honor to kick off this fundraising campaign in his honor," said Valley Independent Bank Vice President, Mike Wiley.

VYB President Alan Moore will be responsible for the daunting task of designating which participants will be awarded funds to cover the cost of registration. The Visalia Oaks will take on the far easier task of raising funds for this worthy baseball program.

Established in 1997, Visalia Youth Baseball, Inc. (a 501 c-3) is comprised of the Cal Ripken Division with children ages 5-12 participating and the Babe Ruth Division serving youth ages 13-19. In 2004, the league had over 950 participants. Registration forms are available at Midtown Sports, Moore Court Reporters, or at the VYB baseball field at Linwood Elementary School. Registration begins in January.

Contributions of any amount can be sent to: Visalia Oaks Baseball – 440 N. Giddings – Visalia, CA 93291. Checks should be made payable to Visalia Youth Baseball. A $75 donation covers one participant for one season. Anyone considering making a contribution can contact Jennifer Whiteley, General Manager of the Visalia Oaks with further questions. As the Oaks' Opening Day 2005 approaches, in-stadium fundraising efforts will be put in place to sponsor participants for the 2006 VYB season.
