CARY, N.C. -- Carolina RailHawks captain Brad Rusin has been named the NASL Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.

Rusin played a key role in the RailHawks' defensive effort on Saturday against Montreal. Marking Impact forward Ali Gerba for much of the match, Rusin held him without a shot over 90 minutes and was called for just one foul.

"I am honored by this selection," Rusin said. "I give all the credit to our coaching staff for preparing us and my teammates for getting the job done. It would be hard to receive this honor without them."

Rusin also kept the RailHawk' backline organized and held the Impact to nine shots, only two on goal. Despite an 11th-minute goal that saw the RailHawks trailing 1-0 early, Rusin and the defense's effort over the final 80 minutes kept the Impact from striking again, while the RailHawks rallied for two goals before halftime to earn a 2-1 win.

"Brad's among the most talented young defenders in the country," RailHawks coach Martin Rennie said. "It was his first game of the season and we certainly noticed his presence. That's the standard of performance we expect of him, and we're always glad when he plays to that level."

Rusin and the RailHawks return to WakeMed Soccer Park on Wednesday evening, when they will face FC Edmonton at 7 in the first-ever meeting between the two franchises.
