Chesapeake Baysox News Release
AKRON, Ohio - The final matchup of a three-game series between the Bowie Baysox and Akron Aeros was suspended Wednesday night as heavy rains passed through Northeast Ohio. The game will be completed as part of a doubleheader when the Aeros travel to Bowie August 23 through 25.
The game began after a one-hour and 47-minute rain delay and officials halted the action again just 15 minutes after first pitch, in the top of the second inning. The game will resume tied at 0-0 in the top of the second with no outs and first baseman Brandon Waring on first base. In accordance with Minor League Baseball rules, this game will be played through nine innings when it is completed, and the game originally scheduled for that day will be seven innings long.
Baysox third baseman Ryan Adams hit a double down the left-field line in the top of the first inning, and will be credited with his 33rd double of the season once the game is completed, as he closes in on the Baysox single-season record of 39 doubles.
Starting pitcher Pedro Viola retired the Aeros in order in the bottom half of the first inning, striking out center fielder Jordan Henry for the first out.
Waring led off the top of the second inning with a single to right field before home plate umpire Jordan Ferrell called the teams off the field.
With a 8:52 p.m. first pitch after of the initial delay, the rainout spared the Baysox from a long night ahead of the drive back to Bowie, where they open a four-game series against Eastern Division cellar dwellers New Britain Thursday at 7:05 p.m. That series features fireworks on Friday and Saturday and the first game back, Thursday, is the Baysox "Salute to 'The Dude,'" a tribute to the cult classic film The Big Lebowski. Fans who come dressed as The Dude get $4 off a lower-reserved ticket, and any fan with nine toes will get a free lower-reserved ticket. On Saturday, July 31, the Baysox will attempt to break several world records, including most people sitting on whoopee cushions at the same time. Sunday's game will feature the finale of the Baysox Kids' Summer Concert Series, with a pre-game performance by Rocknoceros and a special appearance by PBS's Super Why and Alpha Pig. Fans can purchase a $10 ticket for the Rocknoceros concert that includes a general admission seat for the game.
