OMAHA, NE - For the second year in a row, the Omaha Royals have been voted as Best Omaha Sports Team by readers of Omaha Magazine. The publication's 18th annual Best of Omaha Awards, a reader-determined list of the best businesses and services offered throughout the city, is printed in its special, 130-page January/February 2010 edition.
More than 16,000 voters - a record number - participated in this year's balloting, which was conducted online. Best Omaha Sports Team was one of 138 award categories, with the top three vote-getters in each category listed in Omaha Magazine's current issue. The Royals were followed in their category by the Creighton University men's basketball team in second place and the Omaha Beef in third.
"As our staff prepares for the final season at historic Rosenblatt Stadium, we are excited that metro area fans again honored us as Best Omaha Sports Team," said Martie Cordaro, Royals Vice President/General Manager. "We hope the people in the metro area who haven't attended a game the past three seasons will come see what our brand of family, fun entertainment is about."
The Royals drew 371,046 fans to Rosenblatt Stadium in 2009, exceeding 300,000 fans for the 22nd consecutive season. The team's attendance was up more than six percent compared to 2008, when a total of 349,376 fans watched Royals games. The Royals' average attendance in 2009 was 5,457 fans, which ranked 10th in the 16-team Pacific Coast League and was up from the 2008 season's average of 5,375. The 2009 campaign marked the Royals' largest total and average attendance figures in the past nine years.
The Royals open their 2010 season at Rosenblatt Stadium on Thursday, April 8th at 7:05 p.m. facing the Memphis Redbirds. 2010 season tickets, mini-plans and other ticket packages are currently on sale, with single-game tickets going on sale Saturday, March 13.
