Reading Royals News Release
Trenton, NJ - The Reading Royals of the ECHL (1st Atlantic Division, 29-12-2-363), affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, defeated the Trenton Devils (3rd Atlantic Division, 16-25-1-336), 4-3, at Sun National Bank Center in Trenton, New Jersey. Reading built a three goal lead (4-1) a minute into the second period and was able to hold off a hard charge from the Devils from that point forward. The win, which ran Reading's record to 6-3-0-1 against the Devils this year, gave the Royals a 2-1 advantage in the three-game set played between the two teams this weekend, during which the Royals were outshot by a total of 139 - 67.
Goaltender Ben Scrivens (win, 10-3-0-0, 41/44) made any number of quality stops, including several of a critical nature on Grade-A chances down the stretch, to become the first goaltender in the Royals' ten year history to win nine consecutive games. The Devils Jeff Lerg (loss, 6-7-0-0, 8/12 in 20:57) started and sustained his second loss of the weekend to the Royals. Shane Connelly came on in substitution early in the second and made all five stops he was called upon to make from that point forward. For the eleventh game in the last thirteen played, the Royals registered a power play goal (1-2). For the twenty-first time this year, Reading's PK blanked the opposition's power play (0-2).
Reading broke through 6:27 into the first when Louis Liotti fired from the right point. Lerg made a dramatic split save with the right pad, but the rebound kicked to the low slot, where Brett Gallant retrieved and fired. Lerg stopped that as well, but on the third bite at the apple, Devin Timberlake punched it through for his sixth of the year. 11:35 into the first, Ryan Donald shot from the left point. The puck appeared to go in and out of the catching glove of Lerg, allowing Andrew Sarauer to chop it free. The puck slid to the right side of the crease, where Timberlake stepped up for the early tap in and his second of the game. 14:00 into the first Trenton broke through, when Ryan Ginand dropped to a trailing Trevor Kell in the right circle. Kell ripped a beauty across the body of Scrivens top shelf stick side for his tenth of the year.
Reading regained the two goal lead twenty-seven seconds into the second period while playing with the man advantage, when Jared Ross fired a bomb from the high slot that blew by everyone for his fifth of the year. Twenty-four seconds after that, Todd Perry made it a 4-1 lead when he carried deep into the left circle and went bar-and-in glove side for his third of the season-all three of which have proven to be game winners.
Trenton began their battle back 3:15 into the second, when Brad Miller ripped a one-timer from the mid-slot that hit multiple players on the way in before crossing the goal line for Miller's sixth of the year. With 1:56 left in the second, the Devils made it a one-goal game when Ryan Ginand shot from the left circle. Scrivens responded with the left pad stop; but the puck slid to the right side of the crease, where Ginand, following his shot, got an easy tap in with Scrivens down and out. From that point forward, pretty much all of the attack came from the Devils, while the Royals played a relatively smart road-oriented defense-first style. Trenton did get their chances from time-to-time, but Scrivens thwarted those bids when needed; and the Royals picked up the team's sixteenth road win of the season (16-7-1-1).
The Royals are off until Friday night (February 11, 2011 @ 7:00 pm), when the team will travel to Cambria County War Memorial Arena in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, to take on the Wheeling Nailers. The Royals game day broadcast will kick off with the pre-game warm-up show presented by The Works at Wyomissing on the Royals Broadcast Network (WRAW 1340 am in Reading, www.1340wraw.com) at 6:30 pm.
