August 3, 2003 - Central Baseball League (Central League)
Alexandria Aces News Release
The Kansas City Royals purchased the contract of the Alexandria Aces' Shaun Shiery Sunday, making the left-hander the first Aces player sold to a major league organization this season.
One of the top pitchers in the Central League this season, Shiery has a 10-3 record and 2.37 ERA. Shiery leads the league in innings pitched (129.1) and is second in wins, strikeouts (118) and complete games (6).
Shiery attended Tarleton State University where he was primarily on outfielder, pitching sparingly. After college, he signed with the Montgomery Wings of the All American Association. Shiery caught the eye of Tampa Bay, signing with the Devil Rays after the season. He pitched for the Charleston RiverDogs of the South Atlantic League in 2002.
The Aces are preparing to host the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings in a three-game series starting Monday. The Central Baseball League plays a 96-game schedule between May and August 2003.
The 10-member league has teams located in Amarillo, Edinburg, Rio Grande Valley (Harlingen), San Angelo, Robstown and Ft. Worth, Texas; Alexandria and Shreveport, La.; Springfield/Ozark, Mo.; and Jackson, Miss.
