Royals select contract of Anthony Lerew

September 23, 2009 - Texas League (TL) - Northwest Arkansas Naturals News Release

SPRINGDALE, AR - Wednesday, Naturals right-hander Anthony Lerew became the first player in the Naturals' short history to be called up to the parent Kansas City Royals without first making a pit-stop at Triple-A Omaha.

The 26-year old Dillsburg, PA resident's contract was selected Wednesday by the Royals, who penciled him in to start Thursday's game against the Boston Red Sox because the scheduled starter for Thursday, former Natural Dusty Hughes, is sidelined with nerve irritation in his elbow.

Lerew led the Naturals in wins in 2009, posting a 10-6 record and 4.09 ERA for Northwest Arkansas, plus a 2-0 mark and 0.60 ERA in two playoff starts.

No newcomer to the Majors, Lerew pitched in 11 games for the Atlanta Braves over three seasons and posted an 0-2 record and 8.31 ERA. The two losses came in 2007 in three starts for the Braves. He missed the remainder of 2007 and part of 2008 while recovering from Tommy John surgery and was signed as a minor league free agent by the Royals during spring training.

To make room for Lerew on the 40-man roster, the Royals placed left-hander Bruce Chen on the 60-day disabled list with a torn left oblique muscle.

The Northwest Arkansas Naturals are the Double-A Texas League affiliate of the Kansas City Royals and play at state-of-the-art Arvest Ballpark, located in Springdale. The Naturals have a toll-free ticket hotline (1-877-444-2637) for fans to purchase Naturals tickets. Our website, nwanaturals.com offers fans the opportunity to purchase tickets online and avoid lines at the ticket windows by printing their tickets at home or at the office.
