Royals Game with Albuquerque Cancelled

SURPRISE, AZ - The exhibition game scheduled for Wednesday in Surprise between the Omaha Royals and the Albuquerque Isotopes was cancelled by the Los Angeles Dodgers, parent club of the Triple-A Isotopes. Omaha owned an exhibition record of 5-5-1 entering Tuesday night's game against the Oklahoma City RedHawks, the results of which have not been reported at this time.
Omaha's final Spring Training game is scheduled for Thursday afternoon, when the Royals face the Tacoma Rainiers, Seattle's Triple-A affiliate, in Peoria, Arizona. Kansas City right-hander Gil Meche, battling back from shoulder stiffness, will pitch in a Minor League game on Thursday, but it has not been reported if that will be with the O-Royals or a lower-level affiliate.
It was reported today by www.royals.com that veteran lefty Bruce Chen will start the season with Omaha. Chen, who was in the mix for a bullpen spot with Kansas City, made two Cactus League relief appearances for the parent club. He posted a 3.00 ERA after allowing one earned run on three hits over three innings. Chen split the 2009 season between Omaha and KC, going 4-2 with a 3.40 ERA in 14 Triple-A games (13 starts) and 1-6 with a 5.78 ERA in 17 big league appearances, including nine starts.
Meantime, the Kansas City Star reports that while Alex Gordon will begin the season on the disabled list, his broken right thumb has healed to the point that he expects to be ready to begin an injury rehab assignment with Omaha by the time the Triple-A club opens its season next week.
