PHOENIX, AZ - After falling behind 7-0 early, the Omaha Royals scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning Monday, but the Nashville Sounds held on for a 9-6 victory at the Milwaukee Brewers Spring Training Complex in Phoenix.
Royals cleanup hitter Graham Koonce belted a two-run home run as part of the fifth inning rally. Omaha catcher Max St. Pierre went 2-for-3 in the contest with a double and a run scored.
Right-hander Martin Vargas was the only one of five Royals pitchers who was not touched for at least one run. Vargas, who spent most of the past five seasons pitching in Japan, Korea and Taiwan, tossed a scoreless inning of relief.
Omaha, now 3-3-2 in Cactus League action, takes on the Oklahoma RedHawks Tuesday at the Spring Training complex the two clubs share in Surprise.
The Royals open their 2007 Pacific Coast League season on Thursday, April 5th at Albuquerque, with the home opener at Rosenblatt Stadium slated for Friday, April 13th at 7:05 p.m., also vs. the Isotopes.
