Alexandria Beetles News Release
Alexandria, MN - Will Fulmer and Tanner Vavra each recorded two hits at the top of the Alexandria lineup, and Jimmy Pickens had a single and stole three bases in his Beetles debut, but the St. Cloud Rox came away with a 7-1 victory at Knute Nelson Memorial Ballpark in the second game of a four game series.
St. Cloud (4-5) scored one run in the third and two in the fourth before an eighth inning grand slam off the bat of leadoff hitter Andy Henkemeyer blew the game open.
Alexandria (2-7) threatened continuously throughout the game and pulled within two in the bottom of the fifth but could not generate any sustained offense against starter Zach Hirsch or reliever Tony Mollica.
One night after an error-filled 15-7 game in St. Cloud, Thursday's affair was much more competitive and clean played. Alex Lakatos in his second start of the year was efficient through two only to walk two in both the third and fourth, departing with the bases loaded and down 1-0 in the fourth.
Nine-hitter Phil Immholte scorched a two-run double to greet reliever Jon Reed to plate two and make the score 3-0 with all three runs earned and charged to Lakatos.
A two-out double by Fulmer in the fifth was followed by an infield chopper single by Vavra. Rounding third, Fulmer never stopped, and slid around the St. Cloud catcher acrobatically into the back door to cut the deficit to 3-1.
That was as close as the Beetles would get as Henkemeyer's two-out grand slam in the eighth took away the intrigue of a tight game in the final innings.
The two teams play game three of their series tomorrow night in St. Cloud at 7:05 CDT.
