Elmira Pioneers News Release

BROCKTON - The cavalry arrived in the form of two new players for the Rox Friday night, both of whom figured prominently in an 11-2 rout of the Elmira Pioneers. Whether pitcher Mike Henry and outfielder Steve Newson have arrived in time to rescue the Rox flickering wild-card hopes remains to be seen.

Henry, acquired this week from San Angelo (Tex.) of the Central League, made an impressive debut for the Rox, limiting the Pioneers to three hits and two runs, one unearned, while striking out six in seven innings.

Newson, another Central League alum (Jackson, Miss.), played right field for the Rox and had two hits, including a double, drove in a run and scored three in his introduction to a home sellout crowd of 5,586 in Campanelli Stadium, the second-largest crowd in Rox history.

The Rox banged out 14 hits and took advantage of four Elmira errors to win easily, opening a 6-1 lead through six innings before breaking it open with five runs in the seventh, three runs scoring on Mike Sandovals bases-loaded double. Sandoval finished the night with four RBIs, the other coming on a sacrifice fly.

The Rox did not have a home run, but every player in Ed Nottles starting lineup had at least one hit, and five players had two.

Elmira starter Chris Zallie, who was tagged for six runs (four earned) on eight hits and four walks in 4 2/3 innings, took the loss.

After the Bangor Lumberjacks split a doubleheader with the Aces, the Rox are four games out of the wild-card race with 15 games to play.

The Rox (14-16, 41-35) take on the Pioneers (9-21, 26-50) again Saturday at Campanelli. First pitch is at 7:11 p.m. Tickets are available and can be purchased at the Rox box office, by phone at (508) 559-7070, or by visiting www.brocktonrox.com.
