Brockton Rox News Release
Little Falls, N.J. - The Brockton Rox were swept for the first time all season, losing to the New Jersey Jackals, 4-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium. The Rox finished their seven-game road trip at 3-4.
New Jersey (6-3 second half, 25-30 overall) scored first for the first time in the series as DH Jacob Buter led off the second inning with a homer, his 11th of the season, off Rox starter Jose Aquino. The Jackals doubled its lead in the third with a two-out RBI single by 1B Jabe Bergeron.
2B Travis Jones connected with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning plating SS Dan Betteridge, who led off the inning with a single, to give the Jackals a 3-0 advantage.
Brockton (4-6, 31-26) broke onto the scoreboard in the sixth inning. DH Melvin Falu doubled with one out, moved to third base on a wild pitch, and scored on RF Keith Brachold's ground ball that was misplayed by Bergeron. It was Brachold's 41st RBI of the campaign.
The Jackals regained the three-run advantage in the seventh on CF Adam Godwin's solo long ball, his fifth of the year. Godwin brought home the winning run in each of the first two games of the series.
The Rox were held at bay over the final two innings by the Jackals bullpen. LHP Edgar Estanga pitched the eighth with no hits and one strikeout. RHP Romas Hicks earned the save in the ninth, after blowing the save yesterday, his 13th of the season.
LHP Isaac Pavlik (6-3) was tremendous for his second straight outing. In his last start against Sussex, Pavlik threw a complete-game, five-hit shutout. Today he allowed just one run on five hits in seven innings with no walks and six strikeouts. Pavlik is 4-0 against the Rox this season in four outings.
Aquino (0-1) suffered the defeat in the first start of his professional career. It was a quality outing, allowing three runs and eight hits in six innings. He walked two and struck out two. RHP Buster Lussier pitched two frames out of the pen, giving up a run on three hits with two punch outs.
LF Mike Conroy reached base multiple times for the ninth consecutive game, as he was 0-for-2 with two hit by pitches. Falu doubled and scored the lone run of the game for Brockton, and Brachold finished 1-for-4 with a double and the RBI in the sixth.
Godwin had a 2-for-3 contest for the Jackals with the seventh-inning blast, a walk and two runs scored. 3B Abraham Nunez had a multi-hit game, as did Bergeron and LF Jeff Grose
The Rox are on just their second three-game losing streak of the season after being swept in this three-game series by the Jackals. Brockton finished the year at Yogi Berra Stadium with just a 2-8 record.
Brockton will have a day off on Thursday before opening a four-game set at Campanelli Stadium on Friday with a 7:05 p.m. start against the Sussex Skyhawks. RHP Wayne Lundgren (6-3) will toe the rubber against Sussex RHP Tim Stringer (3-3).
