July 22, 2012 - Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL)
Old Orchard Beach News Release

Brockton, Mass. - After surrendering an RBI double to Vito Perna (Southeastern Louisiana) in the bottom of the first inning, the Torrington Titans shutout the Brockton Rox through the final eight frames of Sunday's game en route to a 5-1 victory at Campanelli Stadium in Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL) action.

Torrington (20-16) received another brilliant start from Tyler Dierke (Kenyon), who improved to 5-1 with the win. The right-hander allowed just one run on five hits, while walking none and striking out four in seven innings.

After Perna's double to left field scored Norton's Sean Ryan (Wheaton) in the bottom of the first, the Titans pitching staff held Brockton (17-19) scoreless for the remainder of the game. Michael Joseph (Middlebury) and Tyler Bashlor (South Georgia) combined to work the final two innings in relief of Dierke to seal the victory, allowing just two hits along the way.

The Titans posted their first run of the game in the top of the third inning after an RBI single from Conor Bierfeldt (Western Connecticut) plated Rich Graef (UMass-Amherst) and tied the game at one. An inning later, the Titans tacked on another run to take the lead when Kevin Lum (Cameron) came around to score on a Gabe Craven (Florence-Darlington) RBI single.

Torrington increased its lead to three with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead. Ryan Plourde (Fairfield) ripped a ground rule double down the left field line to score the first run, while Lum followed moments later with an RBI single of his own to score Bierfeldt.

Leading by three, Plourde doubled once again in the ninth inning to score Gus Craig (Columbia) and give the Titans an extra insurance run heading into the final half inning.

Evan Brown (Newberry) suffered the loss (1-4) for the Rox after conceding four runs on eight hits in four innings of work, while striking out two and walking none.

Cohasset's Brendan Doonan (Rhode Island) and Frank Fantino (Southern New Hampshire) were spectacular in relief of Brown for Brockton, as the duo combined to allow just one hit and no walks in four scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Doonan fanned four in two innings, while Fantino chalked up three strikeouts in two innings as well.

Perna led the Brockton offense with a 2-for-4 performance at the dish that included a double and an RBI. Luis Gonzalez (Concordia) racked up a pair of hits, while A.J. Lardo (Maryland) went 1-for-4 with a pair of stolen bases.

On the other end, Plourde led the way for the Titans, going 2-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs. Bierfeldt went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Lum added a pair of hits to go along with an RBI, a stolen base, and a run scored.

The Rox return to action on Monday night as they host the Pittsfield Suns at 7:05 p.m. The Titans are off until Tuesday, when they host the Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide for a doubleheader beginning at 5:05 p.m.
