Rox Beat Spirit 7-4

In a game marred by errors the Rox beat the Spirit for the second time in as many days, 7-4.

The Spirit would strike first in the top of the 1st, after a throwing error by Jake Daubert left runners on second and third, Fran Riordan would hit a 2-run double giving the Spirit an early 2-run lead. In the bottom of the 1st the Rox would get help as a Jose Castellanos error scored Mike Davis.

The Spirit would extend their lead in the 4th as John Schmitz hit an RBI double accounting for their second run of the inning. Again, the Rox would answer in their half, Jake Daubert lined a 1-out double just over the first base bag into right field. Ben Beck would hit a single that scored Daubert cutting the Spirit lead to 4-2.

That lead would hold through the bottom of the 5th when Mike Torres drew a leadoff walk, Saul Bustos reached on a sharply hit single, and Craig Lewis followed with a fielders choice that scored Torres. Lewis would steal second and advanced to third on an error by the Spirit. Mel Rosario poked one past the drawn in infield scoring Lewis.

With the game tied at 4 in the bottom of the 6th, Ben Johnstone drew a 1-out walk then stole second and third on consecutive pitches. Johnstone scored when Mike Torres reached on the 2nd error for Jose Castellanos. The error prolonged the inning setting the stage for Saul Bustos to hit a 2-run homerun to left field stretching the Rox lead to 7-4.

Newly acquired Chad Ward got the start and went 3 innings allowing 1 earned run. Jeremy Lewis saw his first action of the season going 2 innings allowing 2 earned runs Brian Dorsey and Tony Stutz would add 3 innings of scoreless relief.

With the win the Rox move to 4-0 during the exhibition season. Tomorrow night the Rox will finish off their pre-season schedule at Campanelli Stadium against the Berkshire Black Bears, 7:11 pm first pitch.
