ROUND ROCK, Texas - Derek Norris' three-run homer capped a five-run third inning as the Sacramento River Cats defeated the Round Rock Express 8-2 in Wednesday night's Pacific Coast League action at The Dell Diamond. The Express (20-27) hold a two-games-to-one lead on the River Cats (30-17) in the series.
Manny Ramirez plated the game's first run with a run-scoring fielder's choice in the third. After Chris Carter delivered a sacrifice fly, Michael Taylor walked ahead of the Norris homer. Brandon Moss added an RBI double in the fourth, and Eric Sogard had an RBI single in the sixth. Taylor capped the Sacramento scoring with a solo homer in the seventh.
Round Rock did not dent the scoreboard until three consecutive two-out hits in the ninth. Joey Butler singled, and Brad Nelson followed with a double. Matt Kata scored both with a single up the middle. That kept the Express from only their second shutout of the season (April 18, 4-0 vs. New Orleans). Nelson's double also kept alive Round Rock's doubles streak; the Express have at least one double in every game since the season opener - a 46-game streak.
Other Express streaks did not remain intact. Ryan Spilborghs was 0-for-2 with two walks, snapping his 16-game hitting streak; he was held hitless for the first time since joining the Express in early May. Yangervis Solarte was 0-for-4, ending an eight-game streak. He had hit safely in 30 of his last 31 games. Julio Borbon managed a sixth-inning single to push his hitting streak to 11 games, his longest of the season.
Sacramento starter Fabio Castor (2-4) worked six shutout innings on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts for the win. Evan Scribner retired all six batters he faced with two strikeouts. Fautino De Los Santos pitched the ninth.
Express starter Zach Jackson (1-5) shouldered the loss with seven runs on nine hits over six innings; he walked two and tallied four strikeouts. Aaron Heilman surrendered Taylor's seventh-inning homer and one other hit over two innings with one strikeout. Ben Snyder worked a perfect ninth with one strikeout.
Butler and Luis Hernandez both had two-hit games.
Sogard, Moss and Hicks all had two-hit outings, while Luke Hughes had three hits and scored three runs. Ramirez was 0-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Round Rock and Sacramento conclude their four-game series Thursday with a 7:05 p.m. CDT first pitch at The Dell Diamond. Right-hander Neil Ramirez (4-4, 6.75 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Express opposite River Cats right-hander A.J. Griffin (1-4, 4.28 ERA).
