MIDLAND, TX. : The Roughnecks improved to 3-6 with a 46-29 road win over the Austin Turfcats on Saturday evening, May 8, in Austin. The Roughnecks controlled most of the ball game by outscoring the Turfcats 20-3 in the second quarter.
The Roughnecks got on the scoreboard first as QB Tommy Jones found WR Josh Floyd for a 15-yard touchdown pass to make it 6-0. Following a Turfcats field goal, the Roughnecks went on to score 20 unanswered points with three touchdown passes from QB Tommy Jones. Two of the three touchdown passes went to wide out Ryan Bugg, with the other being a 48-yard touchdown strike to Josh Floyd. The Roughnecks took a 26-3 lead over Austin into halftime.
The Turfcats attempted to battle back in the second half after stopping the Roughnecks on fourth down to open the third quarter. However, DL Jermaine Blakely intercepted a screen pass from QB Deron Ellis and returned it 35 yards for a score on the ensuing Turfcats offensive series to make it 36-3.
The Turfcats offense did not back down in the fourth quarter as QB Deron Ellis threw for three touchdown passes with two going to WR Darrick Wallace. The Turfcats closed the gap at 39-23 late in the fourth quarter, but the Roughnecks tacked on a late Josh Floyd touchdown reception to make it 46-23. The Roughnecks went on to recover two onside kicks and run out the clock to seal the win at 46-29.
The Roughnecks improved to 3-6 with the win as the Turfcats drop to 2-7 on the season. The Roughnecks return home to face the Arkansas Diamonds on Saturday, May 15 as the Turfcats travel to Abilene to the face the Ruff Riders on May 15.
