Chicago Slaughter News Release
HOFFMAN ESTATES - The Chicago Slaughter (4-4), the premier indoor football team in the Chicagoland area, edged past first place Central North Division rival Green Bay Blizzard (7-2) with a final score of 46-43 on the road Saturday night in Green Bay. The Slaughter took the game in the final moments of the 4th quarter after a successful 35-yard field goal from Slaughter Kicker Chris Nendick. QB Randy Hutchison led the Slaughter attack going 22-38 for 171 yards and four touchdowns, while WR De'Cody Fagg had ten catches for 81 yards and two receiving touchdowns.
The Slaughter started the scoring when Hutchison hooked up with Fagg on a crossing pattern good for an 8-yard touchdown to make it 6-0 Slaughter. Green Bay scored on a 35-yard touchdown to gain the lead 7-6. Hutchison then found WR Reggie Gray in the corner of the end zone to put the Slaughter back up 13-7 to finish the first quarter scoring. After a missed field goal by both teams, Green Bay scored on a 27-yard touchdown strike from Jake Phillips to Lawrence Brady to put the Blizzard back on top 14-13 midway through the second quarter. Hutchison found Fagg again on both a 12-yard touchdown pass and subsequent two-point conversion to make the score 21-14. Chicago tried an on-side kick, which the Blizzard recovered at the Slaughter 11, but could only settle for an 18-yard field goal to cut the Slaughter lead to 21-17. Chicago caught a break as the defense recovered a fumble and Nendick kicked a 34-yard field goal to extend the team's lead to 24-17 at halftime.
Green Bay built up some momentum to start the second half with Timo Kickerf Amancio hitting a 51-yard field goal to make the score 24-20 in their first series. With the Slaughter driving in their next possession, Blizzard LB Maurice Simpkins intercepted a Hutchison pass in his own end zone and returned it 50 yards for a Green Bay touchdown to go back on top 26-24 after three quarters. After a blocked field goal, Green Bay scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to go up 33-24 early in the 4th quarter. The Slaughter got on the scoreboard for the first time in the second half as a scrambling Hutchison found Tavares Woodley, who dashed 11 yards for a score to pull Chicago to within 33-31. The tide then turned for Chicago in a big way. After an apparent Blizzard touchdown was called back for an illegal procedure penalty, DB Chris Rodgers intercepted the next Phillips pass in his own end zone and returned it 52 yards for a Slaughter score to put Chicago up 37-33 after a failed two-point conversion. After trading touchdowns, Green Bay tied up the game with 1:13 left. The offense drove the ball to mid-field where Nendick finished off the game with a field goal that split the uprights and gave Chicago the victory.
"It's obviously a big win for us," said Hutchison after the game. "We should have not lost that game last week, but a win like this can change a season. You see some guys fight and see some guys make big plays in big situations. We just need to keep working hard the rest of the season."
"I was telling Chris [Nendick] that he's one of the best kickers I have ever seen," Robinson said. "Chris kept his head down and we all knew he was going to really help us if he had the chance at the end of the game. We're all proud of him."
The Slaughter is currently in second place behind the Green Bay Blizzard in the IFL Central North Division. This weekend's match-up set the stage to build on the contentious rivalry between these two teams as they will meet twice more during the regular season.
The next road game for the team will be Friday, May 14th against the Bloomington Extreme. The Slaughter will face Green Bay again at the next home game for the Slaughter on Saturday, May 22nd, at the Sears Centre Arena; kickoff will be at 7:05 p.m. For more information or for tickets to the May 22nd, please call the team office at (847) 310-3190 or visit the team website at www.ChicagoSlaughter.com.
