Roughnecks Snap Corpus Four Game Win Streak

ODESSA, TX. : The Odessa Roughnecks picked up a big team win over the Corpus Christi Hammerheads on Saturday, June 27 by the score of 55-44. The win snaps the Hammerheads four-game winning streak as the Roughnecks were able to go perfect on scoring opportunities from inside the red-zone. The game started on the wrong track for Odessa as the Hammerheads recorded a safety on the first play from scrimmage after a bad snap from Akeem Rettig to QB Dennis Gile. Odessa was able to find the end-zone on their ensuing offensive series as Jason Johnson ran in a five-yard touchdown run giving Odessa a 7-2 lead. Following a stop on defense the Roughnecks move down the field once again following a couple of completions from Gile to Jimmy Conner. The drive was capped off with a leaping 10-yard touchdown catch from Gile to Torrey Day, making it 14-2, Odessa.

Later in the second quarter Corpus found the end-zone for the first time as QB Cory Miles hooked up with Toric Goins on a 12-yard touchdown pass to cut the Odessa lead to 14-9. Odessa broke things wide open in the second quarter as Zeke Arevalo added a 26-yard field goal and Eric Taylor caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Dennis Gile to make it 24-9. The Roughnecks defense came up big after the score when Kendall Ricketts sacked Cory Miles in the end-zone to record a safety extending Odessa's lead to 26-9. However, LB Johnny Anderson intercepted Dennis Gile on the next drive setting up a Toric Goins eight-yard touchdown run to make it 26-15, Odessa leading at halftime.

The Hammerheads close the gap in the third quarter when Nathaniel Dunn caught a 26-yard touchdown pass from Miles and Ty Sellers returned a kickoff back 48 yards for another score, Corpus stilled trailed 29-28. Odessa was able to register 13 unanswered points between the third and fourth quarters when Jason Johnson added his second rushing touchdown and Keith Turner added a three-yard touchdown run to make it 42-28.

Corpus hung tight in the fourth quarter when Nathaniel Dunn caught another touchdown pass from 12 yards out cutting the lead down to 42-34. The Roughnecks sealed things later on in the quarter when Mike Glover added an incredible five-yard touchdown run and Jason Johnson ran in a 21-yard touchdown run (his third) to extend the Odessa lead to 55-34. The Roughnecks defense assured the victory after DB Joey Robinson intercepted Cory Miles late in the fourth, however Corpus did score one last touchdown late but it was not enough as the Roughnecks held on to win 55-44.

Dennis Gile finished throwing for 278 yards and two touchdowns as Jason Johnson recorded 29 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Jimmy Conner collected 221 all-purpose yards (161 receiving, 60 on returns) as Kendall Ricketts led the Roughnecks defense with 6.5 total tackles recording one interception, one sack and one safety. Hammerheads QB Cory Miles went 15 of 34 for 164 yards and three touchdowns as WR Nathaniel Dunn hauled in seven catches for 95 yards and three scores. The Roughnecks and Hammerheads concluded the regular season series at winning two games a piece.

Odessa hits the road for the Fourth of July this week to face the Abilene Ruff Riders. Game time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. from the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene.
