Abilene Ruff Riders News Release
ABILENE, TX. : The Abilene Ruff Riders could not get back into the win column on Saturday, June 27, losing to San Angelo 56-32 from the San Angelo Coliseum. The Stampede Express jumped out to an early 6-0 lead on the first drive of the game when QB Sonny Cumbie found Tarvarres Williams for a 16-yard touchdown reception. Abilene would turn the ball over on their first offensive possession when QB David Bowie was intercepted by DB John Keith. Tommy Staples would extend the San Angelo lead to 9-0 following a 32-yard field goal. The Ruff Riders got on the board when Bowie found Randy Hymes for a 22-yard touchdown reception but the extra point attempt was no good making it 9-6.
Following a good kickoff return from Voncarie Owens, San Angelo drove the ball down to the Abilene three-yard line as Cumbie would connect with Kaylon Price for a touchdown pass to make it 16-6 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, San Angelo would score six unanswered points with two Tommy Staples field goals. San Angelo would hold a commanding 22-6 lead at halftime.
San Angelo opened the second half on a good note as Cumbie once again found Kaylon Price for a 10-yard touchdown pass extending their lead to 29-6 over the Ruff Riders. Abilene could only manage two field goals in the third quarter as the San Angelo secondary was able to intercept David Bowie twice in the quarter.
Abilene would go on to score 20 points in the fourth quarter when QB Quincy Carter entered the game for starter David Bowie. Carter would go on to throw for three touchdowns in the fourth. However the late effort from Abilene was not enough as the San Angelo Stampede Express kept their playoff hopes alive with a 56-32 win over the Ruff Riders.
The Abilene defense, which has been one of the more consistent factors this season for Abilene surrendered 56 points which is the second highest total of the season (58 - El Paso). The offense turned the ball over five times and the offensive line gave up four sacks. Abilene now looks to secure a home playoff game when they face the Odessa Roughnecks on the Fourth of July. As a reminder, the scheduled game time for the July 4th meeting versus Odessa will be 6:30 p.m. from the Taylor County Expo Center. Abilene will host the Roughnecks on July 4th and the Odessa Roughnecks will host the Ruff Riders on Saturday, July 11 to cap off the â09 regular season.
