Roughnecks Sign Former Gardner-Webb University QB Devin Campbell

ODESSA, TX. : The Odessa Roughnecks announced on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 that the team has signed former Gardner-Webb University quarterback, Devin Campbell, for the 2010 season. Campbell (6'4", 198 lbs.) was a three-year starter at quarterback for the Gardner-Webb program from 2006 to 2008. Campbell completed 440-of-749 (58.7 %) passes for 5,614 yards in four seasons played, including 39 touchdown passes and a passing efficiency rating of 131.2.

"We were impressed with Devin's background and we are very confident that he can compete at this level of professional indoor football. Devin is excited about coming to Odessa and of course he will be competing for the starting quarterback spot throughout training camp. Devin is one of three or possibly four quarterbacks that we are bringing to camp for this season. " explained Odessa Roughnecks Head Coach, Chris Williams.

Campbell is the Gardner-Webb University career leader in average yards per pass attempt (7.5) and average yards per completion (12.7). As a senior in 2008, Campbell set the GWU single season completion percentage mark at 63.2 and finished 16th in the nation in total offense by averaging 258 yards per game. Campbell would finish the 2008 season completing 139-of-220 passes for 1,774 yards and 11 touchdown passes.

Campbell entered his junior season (2007) as a preseason second team All-Big South Conference selection. In eight games played, Campbell threw for 846 yards, six touchdown passes and compiled a passing efficiency rating of 121.4. However, Campbell would arguably have his best season as a sophomore in 2006. Campbell finished with the seventh-best passing yardage total in GWU history in 2006 at 2,215 yards. Campbell completed 174-of-311 passes (52.6 %) that season including 15 touchdown passes. Campbell also led four different game-winning scoring drives in the fourth quarter in 2006.

The Greenville, South Carolina native became the only player in Big South Conference history to record two 400-plus yard games of total offense in a single season (2008). His 409-yard performance against VMI in 2008 was the fifth highest total in a single game in Big South Conference history. He finished fifth in total career passing yards (5,614) in the Big South Conference and sixth in Big South Conference history with 894 offensive plays ran. He set a GWU record by recording 32 completions against Stony Brook during the 2008 season and set a GWU record by recording three 300-plus yard passing games in a single season (2008).
