West Texas Roughnecks News Release

ODESSA, TX. : With it being the final weekend of the regular season for the IFL, the Roughnecks played host to the Katy Ruff Riders. Odessa had wrapped up a playoff berth on Saturday, June 21st, with a victory over Fairbanks. However, Katy needed a win over Odessa to keep their playoff hopes alive and clinch the final seed. The ball game was very much back and forth in the first quarter but the Roughnecks defense picked up key turnovers late in the first half to give Odessa some breathing room on the scoreboard. Katy made things interesting in the second half but could not catch up with Odessa as the Roughnecks put up 24 points in the fourth quarter to secure a 74-61 win.

Katy struck first in the game as QB Jermaine Alfred found WR Jamal Lord for a 15 yard touchdown pass. WR Don Robinson picked up two touchdown receptions in the first quarter from QB Dennis Gile, and LB Sam Griffin intercepted an Alfred pass and returned 25 yards for a score. Odessa led after the first, 20-17.

Odessa's defense stepped up in the 2nd quarter as the offense scored on three possesions in the quarter. Dennis Gile ran in a 2 yard score, Mike Glover broke one tackle after a reception and ran it in for a 31 yard touchdown, and DeWayne Hogan put up another score on a 5 yard run. Katy K Darren Brown added a field goal before the half, but Katy trailed 40-20.

Katy made the game interesting in the second half as they outscored Odessa 14-10 in the third quarter. Jermaine Alfred hit WR Torric Goins for a 8 yard score, and Jamal Lord received a 31 yard touchdown pass to make the score 50-34 Odessa, following the third period.

WR Jimmy Conner kick things off with a bang in the fourth quarter as he caught a 7 yard TD pass from Gile to make it 57-34. But on the ensuing kickoff, Katy fumbled the return and Conner picked it up in stride to return it back for a Roughnecks touchdown. With Odessa up 71-42, Katy made a great attempt at a comeback as Torric Goins picked up two touchdown receptions from 10 and 44 yards out. RB Carlos Alsup ran in a 2 yard score with 3:17 left in the game. However, Katy could not recover an on-side kick as Odessa was able to run the clock out on the ball game and on Ruff Riders season.

Odessa finished the '08 regular season at 7-7 as Katy dropped to 5-9. QB Dennis Gile finished 18-for-27 for 235 yards passing with 5 total touchdowns ( 4 passing, 1 rushing). QB Jermaine Alfred went 16-for-32 for 187 yards passing with 5 touchdown passes, but 2 interceptions. Roughnecks WR Don Robinson had another productive game with 10 catches for 149 yards and 2 touchdown receptions. WR Joel Babb also added 2 total touchdowns as WR Jimmy Conner caught 4 passes for 40 yards. WR Jamal Lord added 7 catches for 78 yards for Katy, and WR Torric Goins collected 5 catches on 83 yards receiving.

Odessa will host a playoff game on Saturday, July 5, 2008 at the Ector County Coliseum. Katy's season concludes at 5-9 as Alaska had clinched the final seed of the IFL post-season after winning the tie-breaker over both the Ruff Riders and San Angelo.
