West Texas Roughnecks News Release
ODESSA, TX. : The Odessa Roughnecks are excited to announce on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 that the organization has received a commitment from former St. Louis Rams offensive linemen, Ken Shackleford, for the 2010 IFL season. The former Georgia Bulldog is currently in the process of signing his contract this week with the Odessa Roughnecks. Shackleford (6'5", 326 lbs.) was drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the sixth round of the 2007 NFL Draft following his collegiate career at Georgia. Shackleford was scouted as an athlete that has the size and strength to play at the next level, and a player that could make an impact on the offensive line. Shackleford saw significant playing time during the Rams 2007 preseason, but due to a knee injury, he was waived by the Rams on August 31, 2007. Shackleford signed to a two-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs on August 9, 2008 but he was later released by the Chiefs during their 2008 preseason on August 26, 2008.
As a senior at Georgia in 2006, Shackleford started every game for the Bulldogs at split tackle and became a significant leader on the offensive line. Shackleford was part of a line that only allowed 17 sacks during the 2006 season which ranked second among all teams in the SEC. Shackleford was part of a senior class that compiled a 40-12 record, a 3-1 bowl record and a SEC Championship in 2005. Georgia finished 9-4 in 2006 including a Chick-fil-A Bowl win.
Shackleford had extensive playing time as a junior in 2005 at the offensive tackle position. Shackleford was listed as the number two split tackle for the Bulldogs following an impressive spring workout. He was a key factor on an offensive line that helped the Bulldogs win the SEC Championship in '05.
"At 24-years old, Ken is an impressive young man who is hungry to get back to playing in the NFL. He is a very humble and genuine person off the field, and he will be a key player for the Roughnecks especially in the running game and pass protection. I'm excited to have a player with his athletic ability as part of the Roughnecks." stated Odessa Roughnecks Head Coach, Chris Williams
As a sophomore at Georgia in 2004, Shackleford got his first career start against Vanderbilt. He became a valuable member of an offensive line that helped Georgia average nearly 400 total yards per game. He became the recipient of the Iron Man Award following the '04 season.
Shackleford attended Villa Rica High School (Villa Rica, GA) where he was named one of the Top 50 Prospects in the state according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution following his senior year. Shackleford was additionally named to the Class AAA All-State First Team and the Times-Georgian All-Area Team as a senior.
