Roughnecks Open Season Saturday in OKC
March 15, 2018 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
FC Tulsa News Release
Tulsa Roughnecks FC will open its fourth season of play in the United Soccer League this Saturday, March 17, with a trip to Oklahoma City to face the OKC Energy at Taft Stadium. Kickoff for the 2018 opener is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
Fans in the Tulsa area who cannot make the trip to Oklahoma City can watch the match live on YouTube through the USL Match Center.
The match will mark the first of three meetings this season in what supporters groups have labeled the Black Gold Derby. It will be the only regular season game in Oklahoma City this year between the two sides.
It will be the second time that the Roughnecks have opened a season against their cross-state rivals. In its first-ever game, TRFC faced the Energy in the 2015 season opener as the two teams battled to a 1-1 draw before the largest crowd to ever see a soccer match at ONEOK Field.
The Roughnecks won the season series last year for the first time, winning two of the three matchups to claim The Wrench from the clubs' supporters. Tulsa and Oklahoma City split the regular season series in the Roughnecks first season, with each team winning one game and two games ending in draws. In 2016, the Energy swept the season series.
TRFC enters the regular season after posting a 2-2-1 record during the preseason. The two losses were at the Chicago Fire of MLS and at San Antonio FC of USL in the final two preseason matches.
Saturday's game will be the first of 34 regular season games for the Roughnecks, which is two more than the USL played last year.
Tulsa will play its home opener next Saturday, March 24, when it hosts Real Monarchs SLC at ONEOK Field with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m. It will be the first of three straight home matches for the Roughnecks as they will host Orange County SC on Saturday, March 31 (Kickoff at 3:00 p.m.) in the first-ever afternoon match at ONEOK Field. The Portland Timbers 2 will close out the set of home games, playing in Tulsa on Wednesday, April 4 (Kickoff at 7:00 p.m.).
Tickets for the home opener, and all other 2018 matches at ONEOK Field, are currently available online, over the telephone at (918)744-5901 or in person at the stadium ticket office.Â
