Roughnecks Look To Build Momentum Heading Into Post-Season Play

June 10, 2011 - Indoor Football League (IFL)
West Texas Roughnecks News Release

MIDLAND, TX. : The West Texas Roughnecks (9-4) wrap up the 2011 regular season by hosting the Amarillo Venom (4-9) on Saturday, June 11 at the Ector County Coliseum. The Roughnecks are coming off their most impressive victory since defeating the Corpus Christi Hammerheads to win the 2006 Intense Football League Championship, 97-56. Last Saturday, the Roughnecks went on to defeat the Arizona Adrenaline, 92-6, as QB K.J. Black threw for three touchdowns, the defensive unit posted 11 turnovers, and RB DeWayne Hogan set a team record with six rushing touchdowns.

The Roughnecks now turn their attention to an Amarillo Venom team that have won four straight games since beginning the 2011 season 0-9. The Roughnecks will be looking for the season-series sweep as they won the two previous match-ups including a 66-23 win over the Venom back on April 23 in Amarillo. In the previous meeting the Roughnecks defensive unit recorded six interceptions as QB Arkelon Hall posted six total touchdowns, including three touchdown passes to WR Josh Floyd. The Venom defense will get a different look at the quarterback position as QB K.J. Black will likely get the start with Arkelon Hall still out of action with a knee injury. Black has thrown for seven touchdown passes in his last two starts with four of the seven touchdown receptions credited to WR Wilson Kimble. Kimble along with WR Eric Taylor will be key targets in the passing game, but look for Josh Floyd to be an important element as he has recorded four touchdown receptions and close to 200 kick return yards against the Venom this season.

The Venom are coming off an impressive 77-0 win over the Bricktown Brawlers (OKC) back on June 6. Amarillo effectively ran the football for 162 yards and six rushing touchdowns and the play from QB Sherard Ellis has been key toward Amarillo's four-game winning streak. Ellis has thrown for seven touchdown passes to only one interception in his last two games including 68 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. However, Amarillo will face a Roughnecks defense that has allowed a total of 12 points in the last two games, and ranks number one in yards allowed per game (128.1).

The Roughnecks secondary will play a key role on Saturday, but look for linebackers Eric Henri & Tray Hardaway to be important factors in containing the Venom rushing attack. Pressure up front from the Roughnecks defensive line will be a key part in this match-up but look for Venom wide out Anthony Clark to be the go-to target for Sherard Ellis in the passing game.
