FC Tulsa News Release
Tulsa Roughnecks F.C. has come to terms with Fabian Cerda on a new contract that will keep the goalkeeper with the club for the next two seasons. The two-year deal covers the 2018 and 2019 USL seasons, pending league and federation approval.
Cerda started 23 of TRFC's 32 regular season matches in 2017, compiling a 1.26 goals against average. He tied for fourth among all USL keepers with 90 total saves and finished tied for seventh with nine shutouts.
He also played a key role in one of the top moments in the season for the Roughnecks. In a matchup with San Antonio F.C. in the third round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, Cerda and eventual USL Goalkeeper of the Year Diego Restrepo each posted shutouts in 90 minutes of regulation play and 30 minutes of extra time. In penalty kicks, Cerda scored from the spot and made a pair of saves in goal, including the match-winner against Restrepo, to send the Roughnecks into a fourth-round meeting with MLS side FC Dallas.
"It was extremely important for us to re-sign Fabian," said TRFC Head Coach David Vaudreuil. "He played a big part in our success last season. Fabian has the ability to win games by himself, in an exciting fashion. He is popular with our fans, and we are happy to have him for the next two years."
Cerda came to Tulsa last spring from Transandino of Chile after receiving interest from Atlanta United of MLS. He made 42 appearances with Trandandino as the club's number one goalkeeper.
His professional career began in Chile's first division with CD Universidad Católica in 2009, after coming up through the team's youth system. He remained with Católica through 2015, but was loaned to Cobresal in 2014 and appeared in three matches.
