
Roughnecks Hold On For 50-38 Win Over Corpus

MIDLAND, TX. : The West Texas Roughnecks held on for a crucial 50-38 win over the Corpus Christi Hammerheads on Saturday, May 29 from the Ector County Coliseum. The Roughnecks, at one point, held a 30-6 lead in the first half against the Hammerheads but Corpus closed the gap at 42-38 in the fourth quarter. The Roughnecks were able to seal the win as LB Nathaniel Dunn intercepted Corpus QB Wesley Cooper late in the fourth quarter, and RB Jorvorskie Lane found the end-zone on a 10-yard touchdown run to close out the game at 50-38.
In the first quarter, following a Zeke Arevalo field goal, the Hammerheads took their first lead at 6-3 when Wes Cooper found Cory Brittan for a nine-yard touchdown pass. The Roughnecks answered the score as Tommy Jones found Steve Bergeski for a 17-yard touchdown pass to make it 9-6. Following a fumble recovery by Roughnecks DL Jerrickus Speights, the Roughnecks extended their lead to 16-6 when Jones found Bergeski again for a 25-yard touchdown pass.
On the ensuing Hammerheads possession, Roughnecks DB Austin Smith forced a Justin Hardman fumble which Jerrickus Speights recovered and returned back 25 yards for a touchdown to make it 23-6. Following a missed Hammerheads field goal attempt, Tommy Jones connected with Dexter Henderson for a 28-yard touchdown pass to give the Roughnecks a 30-6 lead.
The Roughnecks took a 30-12 lead into the second half, but the Hammerheads stormed back as Wesley Cooper found Cory Brittan for a 28-yard touchdown pass to make it a 30-20 game. The Roughnecks extended their lead to 36-20, when Tommy Jones found Steve Bergeski on a tipped pass that Bergeski caught and ran into the end-zone for a 19-yard score.
Corpus made it a 10-point game again as Cooper found Brittan for a 10-yard touchdown pass making it 36-26. Following a two-yard touchdown run by Justin Hardman in the fourth quarter, Tommy Jones connected with Steve Bergeski for the fourth time on a six-yard touchdown pass to give the Roughnecks a 43-32 lead. With the Roughnecks looking to close out the game, Wes Cooper connected with Brian Murphy on a 30-yard touchdown pass to pull the Hammerheads within five points at 43-38.
The Hammerheads would have a shot to take the lead with a drive that started on their own five yard line with under four minutes remaining in the game. But Wesley Cooper was intercepted by LB Nathaniel Dunn to give the ball back to the Roughnecks offense. The Roughnecks would seal the win as RB Jorvorskie Lane posted a 10-yard touchdown run giving the Roughnecks a 50-38 victory.
The Roughnecks move to 5-7 on the season as the Hammerheads drop to 5-6. The Roughnecks will once again host the Corpus Christi Hammerheads in the final game of the regular season on Saturday, June 19.
