Hammerheads Drilled by Roughnecks

Corpus Christi Hammerheads News Release

Odessa, TX: The Hammerheads three game win streak came to an end Saturday night at the hands of rival West Texas 50-38. The game however was not without controversy that may end up in an official protest by the Hammerheads.

The Roughnecks opened the scoring with a 27 yard field goal by Zeke Arevalo to take an early 3-0 lead. Corpus Christi answered back with a 9 yard strike from QB Wes Cooper to Cory Brittian to give the Hammerheads their only lead of the contest at 6-3. The rest of the first half would belong to West Texas as they built a 30 -12 advantage after thirty minutes of play.

The controversy began in the second quarter after Wes Cooper hit Justin Hardman for a 7 yard completion. Officials ruled that Roughneck DB Austin Smith forced a fumble that was recovered by Jerrickus Speights and returned for a touchdown to give West Texas a 23 - 6 lead. Replays showed however that Hardman was down on the turf when the ball was stripped.

In the second half, Smith was involved in a post play altercation that led to a 15 yard penalty and his ejection from the game. Smith however never left the bench area following the ejection. As per IFL rules, once a player is ejected, said player must leave the field of play which includes the bench area. Last season the Hammerheads were forced to forfeit a win for violating this rule which led to the team missing the playoffs for just the second time in franchise history. Whether the Hammerheads will protest the game remains to be seen as Head Coach Stephen Fillmore said that they would "review the film of the game to determine if a protest is warranted".

Despite the controversy, the Hammerheads made it a very entertaining game in the second half. Corpus Christi shut down the Roughneck passing game while taking their own to another level. We Cooper had the best night of any Hammerhead QB this season going 25 of 44 for 202 yards and 5 touchdowns. However, with the team down 5 points in the 4th quarter, Cooper threw his second pick of the night to former Hammerhead Nate Dunn. Former Texas A&M standout Javorski Lane then put the game away with his only rushing TD of the contest two plays later.

The Loss drops Corpus Christi to 5-6 on the season while West Texas improves to 5-7.

The Hammerheads return to the American Bank Center on Sunday Jun 6th against the Abilene Ruff Riders.
