Roughnecks Fall to Galaxy II, 2-0
May 14, 2015 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
FC Tulsa News Release
Tulsa Roughnecks FC three-game road trip to Arizona and California continued Wednesday night with its first-ever meeting with Los Angeles Galaxy II at the StubHub Center Track Stadium. After a scoreless first half, the Galaxy found the back of the net twice in the second half and posted a 2-0 victory over the Roughnecks.
The defeat dropped the Roughnecks record to 1-4-2 and left them with five points on the season. They will conclude their west coast trip Saturday night with another match in the Los Angeles area with the Orange County Blues.
Wednesday's first half saw opportunities from both sides. The Roughnecks chances lacked the final pass to produce a dangerous chance, but the Galaxy tested Tulsa goalkeeper Zac Lubin several times. Ari Lassiter and Jack McBean both had shots to open the scoring, but were denied by Lubin.
A foul just before halftime gave the Roughnecks an opportunity. Kidd Nwabueze was thrown down into the penalty area, but the foul was ruled to have occurred just outside the box. Iarfhlaith Davoren took the free kick on the right side, and his left-footed shot curled just outside the far post on the final touch of the half.
After the restart, it did not take the Galaxy long to take the lead. Five minuets after play resumed, Lassister finally found the back of the net. The 20-year-old, who is the son of MLS record goal scorer Roy Lassister, scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season to give LosDos a 1-0 lead.
Tulsa's Gibson Bardsley, who had come on in the 40th minute for the injured Ryan Price, worked to solve the Galaxy defense, but none of his shots over the next several minutes tested goalkeeper Brian Rowe.
With Tulsa pushing forward, the Galaxy found a second goal in the 71st minute when McBean got behind the Roughnecks defenders and netted his first goal of the season to make it 2-0.
Coach David Irving turned to his bench in an effort to get back in the match, bringing on Adam Black and Andy Lorei, but Tulsa would not find a goal. The result marked the fourth time that the Roughnecks have been shut out this season.
Los Angeles out-shot Tulsa 17-11 in the match with Lubin called on to make six saves and Rowe making three. Each team had three corners.
Saturday's match with Orange County will kick off at 9:00PM CDT at Anteater Stadium on the campus of the University California-Irvine. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN Radio AM1300 and online at 1300TheBuzz.com.
U.S. Open Cup: The Roughnecks also learned their fate in the second round of the U.S. Open Cup. Ten-man PDL side, Seacoast United, defeated GPS Massachusetts 2-1, meaning Tulsa will host the New Hampshire club on Wednesday, May 20 in the second round. Because the Big 12 Baseball Tournament will be taking place at ONEOK Field, the match will be played at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium on the campus of the University of Tulsa. Season ticket holders will receive tickets to the match as part of their season ticket plans. General admission tickets to the public will be $5 each and will be available online shortly.
